Jin Jun Mei is one of the most influential modern Chinese teas ever created. Although it only emerged in 2005, it rapidly transformed the perception of Chinese black tea, introducing a softer, more luxurious style built around tiny spring buds, floral sweetness, and elegance rather than smoke or strength.

 

The tea was first developed in Tongmu Guan deep within the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian, the historic birthplace of Zhengshan Xiaozhong, known in the West as Lapsang Souchong and often considered the world’s first black tea. Traditional Tongmu black teas were heavily smoked over pinewood fires, creating the bold smoky character that became famous internationally. Jin Jun Mei represented a radical reinvention of that tradition.

 

Instead of mature leaves and pronounced smoke, producers began crafting the tea entirely from tiny unopened spring buds harvested from high mountain tea bushes. Roasting and smoke were softened or removed entirely, allowing the tea’s natural sweetness and fragrance to emerge with remarkable clarity.

 

The name reflects both the tea’s appearance and its prestige. “Jin” (金) refers to the golden buds woven throughout the leaves. “Jun” (骏) evokes nobility, refinement, and exceptional quality, while “Mei” (眉), meaning eyebrow, references the elegant curved shape of the finished leaves.

 

In the cup, Jin Jun Mei opens with honey and orchid aromatics before unfolding into notes of longan, brown sugar, cocoa, stone fruit, sweet potato, and soft caramel warmth. The texture is smooth and rounded, carrying an unusually creamy softness for a black tea while remaining clean, bright, and layered through many infusions.
