Georgia has a long history of tea cultivation, particularly in its western regions, where the humid subtropical climate provides favourable conditions for growing Camellia sinensis. Georgian tea experienced significant expansion during the Soviet era, but the industry later declined. A new generation of small producers is now exploring the potential of Georgian tea through careful cultivation and innovative processing.
Renegade Tea Estate, based in the village of Gumati in Imereti, is part of this revival. The team hand-harvests tea leaves with the help of people from nearby villages and processes them in its own small factory, experimenting with different techniques to develop distinctive flavours.
Georgian Breakfast is one of the farm's more robust black teas. Its aroma is toasty, smoky, and gently spicy, bringing to mind roasted rye bread. On the palate, it is full-bodied and warming, with a satisfying sweetness reminiscent of dried plums.
This is an excellent choice for those who enjoy a stronger black tea with plenty of character.
