come with me to forest hill tea in sri lanka to meet buddhika, the man behind one of the most extraordinary tea gardens i’ve ever visited 🌿

tucked away in erathna, near adam’s peak, forest hill is home to around 900 tea trees, some reaching 40–50 feet tall. planted by scottish planters around 130 years ago but having since been abandoned, these trees have grown into the surrounding forest 🦌

here, buddhika works with nature rather than against it. harvesting is an incredible process: skilled tea pluckers climb these towering trees to handpick the tender leaves, meanwhile the trees’ deep roots, forest surroundings, and growing conditions all contribute to the character of the final cup 🍵

frankly, forest hill made me so glad to have travelled all the way to sri lanka 🇱🇰

the ceylon tea industry was initially built on colonial exploitation, but things are changing. still, those changes are happening very slowly.

in 2023, i got a text from my dad: ‘at doctor’s appointment today i mentioned eisa tea co. doctor said that her husband owns a tea farm in sri lanka and you should visit… something to think about.’

that week, we went together to costa coffee in swansea, my home city, to meet buddhika and try his teas. he explained that he makes wild tea from an abandoned estate near adam’s peak, and i promised that one day, i’d fly out and try it there.

then comes 2026, and i’m visiting sri lanka. my editor tells me that the one man i have to meet is the owner of @foresthilltea - buddhika. my dad’s doctor’s husband.

the next couple of days are so, so lovely. we visit the wild tea trees, buddhika helps me remove leeches (something i’d never had before), my friend and our driver join to taste teas with us, and i buy many. we watch the sunset, we share sri lankan dishes, we get caught in downpour, and we drink tea beside a waterfall.

i am almost continuously in shock that the tea world is so vast and yet so small, and that even a small post-checkup conversation in swansea can lead to exploring adam’s peak in sri lanka.

THANK YOU to forest hill tea for a wonderful visit 😌🍵

come with me to the ceylon tea museum 🇱🇰

maybe it was because of the long drive, maybe it was because i expected more, but i was a little underwhelmed. still, if you’re new to tea and passionate about ceylon tea, this could be a good place to visit 😌
