Vangedi Pekoe, also known as Thieves Tea, is a distinctive Sri Lankan black tea crafted at AMBA Estate in the Uva Highlands. Inspired by traditional tea-making methods, this unique tea is pounded by hand in a stone mortar, preserving a piece of Sri Lanka’s tea heritage while creating a bold, full-bodied brew.
The leaves produce a rich, warming infusion with malty notes, gentle sweetness and a satisfying depth of flavour. Robust yet smooth, Vangedi Pekoe offers a distinctive expression of Ceylon tea, rooted in the traditions of the people who have made it for generations.
Each 50g portion comes in a special hand-stitched bag made by women residents of Mulleriyawa Halfway Home at Sri Lanka’s National Institute of Mental Health. Through this initiative, the women receive vocational training and an opportunity to develop practical skills, while all proceeds from the sale of the bags go towards providing income and support for the residents.
More than just a cup of tea, Vangedi Pekoe brings together Sri Lankan tea-making heritage and a meaningful community initiative. Every bag celebrates traditional craftsmanship while helping support the livelihoods and independence of the women who make it.
