i arrived in oberá before sunrise, mist curling over the red hills of misiones 🌅

waiting for me was taro—founder of kaeriyama, carrying a family tradition begun when his grandfather brought tea seeds from japan in the 1930s. ever since, tea and yerba mate have grown together here, two roots in the same soil 🇦🇷🇯🇵

he and his father showed me the farm, with rows of tea and mate unfolding across the hills, threaded with banana and bamboo. we spent the whole day together, drinking tea and mate. not just drinks, but ritual, language, and invitation 🧉

on a quiet street in bangsar, i met naviskhan — a young tamil-malaysian who’s been making teh tarik for years 😌

when i asked to watch him make teh tarik, he gave me a quick laugh and moved with ease: black tea, condensed milk, a swirl of creamer, and then the pull—poured high between cups, back and forth, until the tea was frothy and smooth 🫖

he served it with roti canai and curry (delicious!). every table around me had the same: a shared rhythm of hands, cups, and conversation. the tea was rich and milky, and just sweet enough 😋
