THE TEA ON TEA

How to Tell a Real Yixing Clay Teapot From a Fake Yixing Clay Teapot

Think all Yixing teapots are the same? Think again 👀

Most people talk about Yixing (zisha) clay, but almost no one shows you how to really tell the difference between a real and a - gasp! - fake. In this video, I cover the basics, but here’s a full checklist of what to look for when examining an Yixing teapot:

1. Surface: rarely glossy, subtle texture

2. Uniformity: too perfect = likely moulded

3. Shape: natural curves, ergonomic feel

4. Weight: solid but balanced

5. Lid fit: smooth, snug, no gaps

6. Clay color: earthy tones, depth varies

7. Imperfections: small marks show handmade quality

8. Sound: gentle tap should ring clearly

9. Patina: develops over time with use

But at the end of the day, the best teapot is the one that brings you the most joy 💖
